Your days

Day 1: Cape Town

Met at Cape Town International Airport and driven to your hotel. A gentle afternoon at the V&A Waterfront.

Day 2: Table Mountain

The cableway and the summit’s universal access walkway, or a free day.

Day 3: Hermanus

About 1.5 hours along the coast. A wheelchair-friendly walkway leads to Gearing’s Point and the Old Harbour, one of the best places to watch whales from land (June to November).

Day 4: To Knysna

The longest drive of the trip, broken with a long lunch and rest stops, to the lagoon town of Knysna.

Day 5: Knysna and Plettenberg Bay

The 800 m wheelchair route at the Garden of Eden forest, and the pathways at Birds of Eden near Plettenberg Bay (a steep section may need help).

Day 6: Tsitsikamma

The boardwalk to the Big Tree, a giant Outeniqua yellowwood, and the riverside boardwalk at Nature’s Valley. Night at Storms River Mouth, with ocean views from the camp’s tar road.

Day 7: To Addo

About 2.5 hours to Addo Elephant National Park. Afternoon game drive and the floodlit waterhole after dark.

Day 8: Addo

Game drives among Addo’s elephants, with time in the underground hide at the main camp.

Day 9: Home

About an hour to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) airport for your flight home.

  • Night 3 · Hermanus · a seafront hotel
  • Nights 4–5 · Knysna · a lagoon-side hotel or guesthouse
  • Night 6 · Storms River Mouth Rest Camp (SANParks) · accessible chalet
  • Nights 7–8 · Addo Rest Camp (SANParks) · accessible chalet or cottage

Best time to go

September–November combines whales at Hermanus, spring flowers and warm days. The Garden Route is mild all year, and Addo is malaria-free all year.

Good to know

  • Addo Rest Camp has a cottage and a chalet for guests with mobility challenges (the chalet has a shower and bath), and Matyholweni Rest Camp has an accessible cottage. The bird hide, the underground hide and the floodlit waterhole viewpoint at the main camp are suitable for wheelchair users, and one loop of the Discovery Trail suits wheelchair users and visually impaired visitors.
  • SANParks accessible units on the Garden Route (Storms River Mouth and Ebb-and-Flow) are booked directly with SANParks; we handle this.
  • At Storms River Mouth, the boardwalk trail to the suspension bridge includes stairs; the camp’s tar road gives wheelchair users ocean views instead.
  • At Hermanus, other parts of the 12 km Cliff Path are uneven; we keep to the wheelchair-friendly walkway.
  • Game drives at Addo are from your step-free vehicle, so you can stop for as long as you like.
